The Crochet Teal Stripes Baby Blanket is a soft, cozy, and beginner-friendly project featuring beautiful ombré-inspired teal stripes separated by crisp white rows. It combines simple stitches with just enough texture to make the finished blanket interesting without being overly complicated.
I especially enjoy using Patons Canadiana yarn for baby blankets because it has a wonderfully soft feel and creates a lovely drape. For this blanket, I used leftover yarn from another project and turned several coordinating teal shades into a soothing striped design.
The main blanket alternates Herringbone Half Double Crochet (HHDC) in white with Single Crochet (SC) in teal. A textured Front and Back Post Double Crochet border gives the blanket a neat, dimensional finish.
It is an excellent project for beginners who want to practice several fundamental crochet stitches while making something beautiful and practical.

Stitch Instructions
Single Crochet (SC)
Insert your hook into the indicated stitch and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through both loops on your hook.
Herringbone Half Double Crochet (HHDC)
Yarn over, insert your hook into the stitch, and pull up a loop. Pull that loop directly through the first loop on your hook. Yarn over once more and pull through both remaining loops.
Double Crochet (DC)
Yarn over and insert your hook into the indicated stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop. You will have three loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through two loops, then yarn over again and pull through the final two loops.
Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC)
Yarn over and insert your hook from front to back, then back to front around the post of the next double crochet. Complete a standard double crochet around the post.
Back Post Double Crochet (BPDC)
Yarn over and insert your hook from back to front, then front to back around the post of the next double crochet. Complete a standard double crochet around the post.
Crochet Teal Stripes Baby Blanket Pattern
Main Blanket
Foundation Chain
With White, chain 110.
You can adjust the starting chain if you would like to make the blanket larger or smaller, as long as you maintain an appropriate stitch count for your desired width.
Row 1
Beginning in the third chain from your hook, work one HHDC into each chain across.
Chain 2 and turn.
Row 2
Work one HHDC into every stitch across.
The chain-2 turning chain does not count as a stitch. Insert your hook directly into the first stitch of the previous row rather than working into the turning chain.
On the final stitch, change to Pale Teal by completing the stitch and pulling the new color through the remaining loops on your hook.
Chain 1 and turn.
Do not cut the White yarn.
Row 3
Using Pale Teal, work one SC into each stitch across.
Chain 1 and turn.
Row 4
Work one SC into every stitch across.
On the final stitch, change back to White. Pick up the White strand that was carried along the side and lay it against the edge of your work as you pull it through.
Chain 2 and turn.
Do not cut the Teal yarn.
Continue the Stripe Pattern
Repeat Rows 1–4 throughout the blanket.
The basic sequence is:
- 2 rows White – HHDC
- 2 rows Teal – SC
Because each color is used for two consecutive rows, you will return to the same side of the blanket whenever it is time to change colors. This makes it possible to carry the unused yarn neatly up the side instead of cutting it after every stripe.
Only cut the yarn when changing from one shade of teal to another.
Carrying the yarn along the side will also reduce the number of ends you need to weave in later. The carried strands will eventually be hidden beneath the border.
Teal Color Sequence
For the ombré effect, work the teal stripes in the following order:
- Pale Teal – 3 stripes
- Medium Teal – 3 stripes
- Teal Heather – 3 stripes
Continue the sequence with White rows separating each teal stripe.
After completing the Teal Heather section, repeat the color progression again, beginning with Pale Teal.
Continue repeating the color sequence until the blanket reaches approximately 30 x 36 inches and finish with the Medium Teal shade.
Blanket Border
Once the main body of the blanket is complete, weave in any loose ends.
The border is worked entirely in White and features alternating Front Post and Back Post Double Crochet stitches for a raised, ribbed texture.
Round 1
Attach White yarn in any corner.
Chain 3.
Work DC stitches around the entire blanket.
At each corner, work 3 DCs into the corner stitch to help the blanket turn smoothly.
For the side edges, adjust the number of stitches slightly if necessary to keep the border lying flat. A useful guideline is to work approximately 2 DCs along the White stripe sections and 1 DC along the Teal stripe sections.
Continue around the blanket until you reach the starting corner.
Round 2
When you arrive back at the starting corner, work 3 DCs into the corner.
Now begin the textured ribbing by alternating:
FPDC, BPDC, FPDC, BPDC
Continue this alternating pattern around the entire blanket.
When you reach a corner, maintain the same FPDC/BPDC sequence while working three stitches around the corner post.
For example, if your next stitch should be a FPDC, work:
FPDC, BPDC, FPDC
around the corner post.
Then continue with the alternating pattern in the next stitch, beginning with the stitch opposite the one you just worked.
The most important thing is to maintain the alternating front-post and back-post pattern throughout the round.
Round 3
Repeat Round 2.
Continue alternating FPDC and BPDC stitches around the entire blanket.
As you work this round, make sure your post stitches are positioned in the same direction as the previous round. This will create an even, consistent ribbed texture around the border.
Continue working three post stitches around each corner post while maintaining the alternating sequence.
Round 4 – Final Edge
For the final round, work one round of SC around the entire blanket.
Work 3 SCs into each corner to create smooth turns.
When you reach the corner where you began, join with a slip stitch into the starting stitch.
Fasten off and cut the yarn.
Use your tapestry needle to securely weave in the remaining ends.
Finishing
Give the completed blanket a gentle stretch and smooth out the edges. If desired, you can lightly block the blanket to help the stitches settle and the corners become more defined.
The combination of soft white rows, coordinating teal shades, and the textured ribbed border creates a beautiful finished blanket that works wonderfully as a handmade baby shower gift or a cozy addition to a nursery.
