There’s something so much fun about crocheting with lots of color, especially when those colors come together to create a bold geometric design. The Colorful Diamonds Crochet Cardigan is one of those projects that immediately catches your eye. Made from individual diamond-shaped sections, this cardigan has a beautiful patchwork look that feels both cozy and playful.
The design by Daria Zagoruyko is also a great project if you enjoy experimenting with yarn. You can choose a carefully planned color palette, mix several shades together, or use up some of the yarn left over from other projects. Since the cardigan is built from separate motifs, it’s easy to play around with color combinations and make the finished piece completely your own.
It’s also a nice project for crocheters who want to try modular construction. Instead of working the entire cardigan in one piece, you’ll make different sections and then join them together following the layout diagrams.
Materials You’ll Need
For this cardigan, you’ll need approximately 850g of yarn in assorted colors.
The original design uses:
- Yarn A: 30% wool, 70% acrylic — 220 m / 100 g
- Yarn B: 50% wool, 50% acrylic — 200 m / 100 g
- Yarn C: 50% cotton, 50% acrylic — 200 m / 100 g
- Yarn D: 100% cotton — 220 m / 100 g
- Crochet hook: 3 mm
Try to choose yarns that are reasonably close in weight. Using yarns with very different thicknesses can change the size of the motifs and make assembly more difficult.
One small but important tip: keep your chain stitches relaxed rather than pulling them tight. Loose chains will help the pieces keep their shape and make the cardigan easier to put together.
Making the Motif Pieces
The cardigan is made from several different sections. Each part has a specific purpose when the pieces are assembled, so it’s worth keeping the completed motifs organized as you work.
Part 1 — Make 6
Start with Chain 6.
Row 1: Starting in the 3rd chain from the hook, work 4 double crochet stitches.
Row 2: Chain 2 and turn. Work 4 double crochet stitches.
Continue repeating Row 2 until you have 6 rows in total.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Make a total of 6 pieces.
Part 2 — Make 1
For this section, use Diagram 2 as your guide.
Begin with Chain 4.
Row 1: Starting in the 3rd chain from the hook, work 2 double crochet stitches, then chain 2.
Continue working into the center stitch of the previous row, turning your work with the chain-2 at the beginning of each row.
Follow Diagram 2 for the increases and shaping until you have completed 6 rows.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Part 3 — Make 1
Part 3 is worked in the same general way as Part 2.
Follow Diagram 2 carefully for the increases and shaping, completing the required 6 rows before fastening off.
Parts 4 and 5 — Make 1 of Each
Work Parts 4 and 5 according to Diagrams 3 and 4.
Once the initial shaping is complete, continue for 6 additional rows, following the same construction used for Part 2.
Fasten off when finished.
Part 6 — Make 1
Begin by making a small “brick” section using the same method as Part 1.
Continue with Rows 2–6 along the side edge.
For the joining and shaping, follow Diagram 6. This section is designed to fit into the cardigan layout, so keep an eye on the diagram as you work.
Part 5a — Make 1
Crochet 6 rows as instructed.
Once the piece is complete, work one round of single crochet around the outer edge.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Putting the Cardigan Together
This is where all those colorful individual pieces finally start to look like a cardigan.
Before sewing anything together, lay out your motifs according to the back, front, and sleeve diagrams. Take a few minutes to check the color placement and make sure every piece is facing the correct direction.
Once you’re happy with the arrangement, sew the sections together.
Next, sew the shoulder seams and then join the sides of the cardigan. Continue assembling the sleeves according to the layout diagrams.
When working around the sleeve openings, you can add a border if you’d like a more finished look.
Be sure to leave the necessary openings for the neckline and bottom of the sleeves.
Because the cardigan is made from individual motifs, taking your time during assembly will make a big difference. It’s much easier to fix the placement of a piece before everything has been sewn together.
Finishing Touches
Once the cardigan has been assembled, take a look at the overall shape and gently adjust any areas that need it.
If the motifs look slightly uneven after joining, a light blocking can help straighten the edges and even out the diamond shapes. Avoid excessive heat or moisture, particularly if your yarn contains acrylic.
And then comes the best part—trying it on!
The beauty of this cardigan is that no two versions have to look exactly alike. Bright contrasting colors will give it a fun, energetic appearance, while muted shades can create a softer, more understated look.
Make It Your Own
One of my favorite things about this type of crochet project is the freedom to experiment.
Have a basket full of leftover yarn? This could be the perfect project for it. You can repeat a few favorite colors throughout the cardigan or let every diamond be a little different.
You could also plan your colors around a particular season. Soft creams, dusty pinks, sage greens, and warm browns would create a cozy autumn-inspired cardigan, while brighter blues, yellows, pinks, and greens would give it a cheerful spring and summer feel.
The important thing is to choose yarns that work well together in weight and texture so that the finished cardigan hangs nicely.
